Double honor

“The approach of isolating these T-cell receptors from vaccinated individuals is highly innovative,” says Prof. Michael Platten about the work of PD Dr. Dr. Lukas Bunse. In November 2025, the neurologist received two significant awards: the DGN Science Award from the German Society of Neurology and the Lautenschläger Prize for young scientists from Heidelberg University. In the summer of 2025, he was awarded the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Prize by the German Research Foundation.

This honor recognizes Bunse’s key contributions to the immunotherapy of brain tumors. His research ranges from the development of a mutation-specific vaccine against IDH1-mutated gliomas to the identification of suitable target structures in glioblastomas, for which the patient’s own T cells are equipped with specific receptors outside the body. These cell therapy approaches have already shown effectiveness in mouse models; initial clinical trials are in preparation.

As a former winner of the Aventis Foundation’s Life Sciences Bridge Award (2023), Bunse impressively demonstrates how scientific curiosity and clinical experience can work together consistently. The Aventis Foundation congratulates him on these extraordinary achievements and wishes him continued inspiring progress in neuro-oncological research.
